TOKYO SPRING!

Shopping / Dining / Afterdark
As the cherry blossoms fall in Tokyo, Spring is in the air and Japan's energetic capital knows how to celebrate it. Tokyo is at its most beautiful now with a climate to match. No wonder the national holiday from 29 April to 5 May is called Golden Week. There's far too much to see in just one visit. For many first-timers the first "must see" is Tokyo Disneyland - almost an exact replica of the Californian original. More off the tourist trail is Tsukiji Fish Market, one of the largest and busiest fish markets in the world. Go early in the morning and breakfast at a sushi bar in one of the adjoining alleys!

Art-lovers have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see some of the greatest names in modern art - including Titian, Rubens and El Greco -- at the "Masterpieces from the Prado" exhibition at the National Museum of Western Art until June 16. It's in Ueno-koen Park, in landscaped gardens that also accommodate temples, Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Art and Tokyo National Museum.

Everyone finds their way to Ginza - especially serious shoppers. Check out the Matsuya, Mitsukosh and Wako department stores, and the "strip" for souvenirs.

The Sony building is a magnet for cyberjunkies, an electronic heaven with every arcade toy and game invented. Takeshita Dori is the centre of teenybopper culture, a packed street of CD stores and stalls selling flamboyant costumes of the "Visual Kei" fans.

Eating out in Tokyo doesn't have to max your credit card. Even at the humblest eateries and street stalls, quality and hygiene is high and noodle shops are never expensive. Just follow the housewives and young people.

Don't miss visiting an izakaya -- literally, "a place where there is sake". These cheap and cheerful taverns are a memorable front-row seat to Japanese culture. The cheapest have red or white lanterns outside, but if you can't see a price list don't go in.

Elsewhere on the night-owl circuit, the Flamme d'Or beer hall in the Asahi Super Dry Building is a quirky landmark atop French architect Philippe Starck's ultra-modern building. Gas Panic clubs are an institution for seasoned bar-flies of both sexes. Hanezawa Beer Garden gets packed on hot nights. La Jetee is a must for film buffs, occasionally frequented by the likes of Quentin Tarantino, and Lion Beer Hall is a tourist attraction that looks as if it's been transplanted from Bavaria.
